Ventnor Coastal Defence Scheme

News shared by the Environment Agency:

The Environment Agency are holding community engagement events at Ventnor Exchange from 1-3 April 2025

The Ventnor Coastal Defence Scheme will repair coastal defences between Steephill Cove and Monks Bay to better protect 3,300 homes, businesses, and infrastructure from the increasing risks of coastal erosion and flooding for the next 60 years.

Ventnor sits at the bottom of the largest urbanised landslide complex in North-West Europe.  Without the seawall and other coastal defences along the seafront, coastal erosion would create instability to the landslide complex and cause property damage in Ventnor and surrounding villages.

The community events at Ventnor Exchange, Church Street:

  • Tuesday 1 April 14:00 to 19:00
  • Wednesday 2 April 12:00 to 17:00
  • Thursday 3 April 09:00 to 13:30

This is an opportunity for the local community to:

  • Understand some of the project challenges and best long-term solution
  • See the concept designs which show what the new defences might look like
  • Speak with project specialists from the Environment Agency, Isle of Wight Council, and engineering partners.
  • Have the chance to share ideas on public space improvements along the promenade that could be incorporated into the final design.
