Changes to IOW council services over the Coronation weekend and May bank holidays.

This May the Island and the rest of the country will have the opportunity to celebrate the Coronation of their Majesties King Charles III and Queen Camilla. To mark this historic event an extra bank holiday has been granted for Monday 8 May. This is in addition to the existing bank holidays on 1 and 29 May. Council services will operate as normal throughout the month. However, some services will be affected over the three weekends.

Arrangements for key services are as follows:

Adult Social Care and Housing Needs

Offices are closed over the bank holiday weekends during which urgent calls should be directed to Wightcare by calling (01983) 821105. In addition:

  • If you are worried about a vulnerable adult, please contact Wightcare on (01983) 821105 (24 hours). You do not need to know everything about a vulnerable adult and what is happening before you contact us.
  • seek information and guidance from the Adult Social Care webpages: Adult social care (iow.gov.uk)
  • seek information and guidance from the Housing Needs webpages: Housing (iow.gov.uk)

Bereavement Services – Book of Remembrance Room

The opening and closing times for the Book of Remembrance Room will be:

Saturday 29 April: 10am to 2pm

Sunday 20 April: 10am to 2pm

Monday 1 May: 10am to 12 noon

Saturday 6 May: 10am to 12 noon

Sunday 7 May: 10am to 2pm

Monday 8 May 10am to 12 noon

Saturday 27 May: 10am to 2pm

Sunday 28 May: 10am to 2pm

Monday 29 May:  10am to 12 noon

Crematorium Grounds

The grounds can be accessed at any time, but if the gates are closed, please park in the road outside and use the pedestrian gate.

Office hours are as normal for weekdays, except for bank holidays, when the office is closed.

All cremation documentation, burial forms and music should be delivered at least three clear office working days prior to each service.

Building Control

Building Control will continue to operate a Dangerous Structure out of hours service over the bank holiday weekend.

If there is immediate danger and a threat to life, call 999. For all other situations, please call (01983) 821105.

Surveyors will still be available for site inspections and enquiries during normal working hours (8.30am to 4.30pm).

Children’s Services

Offices close over the bank holiday weekends.

If you are worried a child is, or at risk of, suffering, neglect or abuse please contact the Children’s Reception Team:

  • Tel 0300 300 0117 (available 24 hours a day).

If you are concerned, it is important that you talk to someone about this.

You do not need to know everything about the child and what is happening before you contact the Children’s Reception Team.

Contact Centre and Help Centres

May Day Bank Holiday

The Contact Centre closes at 1pm on Saturday 29 April, it will then reopen at 8.00am on Tuesday 2 May.

Newport Help Centre will close at 4.30pm on Friday 28 April and re-open at 8.30am on Tuesday 2 May.

The Help Centre, at Ryde Library, will close at 5.00pm on Friday 28 April and re-open at 9.00am on Tuesday 2 May.

Coronation Weekend

The Contact Centre closes at 1pm on Saturday 6 May, it will then reopen at 8.00am on Tuesday 9 May.

Newport Help Centre will close at 4.30pm on Friday 5 May and re-open at 8.30am on Tuesday 9 May.

The Help Centre, at Ryde Library, will close at 5.00pm on Friday 5 May and re-open at 9.00am on Tuesday 9 May.

Late May Bank Holiday

The Contact Centre closes at 1pm on Saturday 27 May, it will then reopen at 8.00am on Tuesday 30 May.

Newport Help Centre will close at 4.30pm on Friday 27 May and re-open at 8.30am on Tuesday 30 May.

The Help Centre, at Ryde Library, will close at 5.00pm on Friday 27 May and re-open at 9.00am on Tuesday 30 May.

Heritage Service

Record Office

The Record Office at Hillside, Newport is open by appointment only (823820).

It will be closed on the Bank Holidays.

Dinosaur Isle Museum

Coronation weekend – Closed on 6 and 7 May, open Bank Holiday Monday.

Monday 1 May – Closed. 

Monday 29 May – Open.

Cowes Maritime Museum

The same opening hours as Cowes Library, above.

Museum of Island History

Open Tuesdays and Thursdays 10.00am to 1.00pm

Newport Roman Villa

Normal opening over the bank holiday weekends.

Parking services

The offices are closed over the bank holiday weekends.

Parking Services will continue to provide parking enforcement across the Island on each of the May Bank Holidays.

Planning

The offices are closed over the bank holiday weekends.

Planning Enforcement complaints, including reporting any alleged illegal works to protected trees, and a range of other online planning actions can continue to be made anytime online at Enforcement (iow.gov.uk)

Recycling and waste collection

There will be no change to Isle of Wight Council waste and recycling services during the May bank holidays or the Coronation Bank Holiday.

Collections (including one-off Bulky Waste collections), Household Waste and Recycling Centre (HWRC) and Commercial Waste and Recycling Centre (CWRC) operations will continue as normal.

Register office

The Register Office will be closed over the bank holiday weekends.

To register a death please call (01983) 823233. For the out of hours emergency service please call Wightcare on (01983) 821105.

Regulatory and Community Safety Services (Licensing, Environmental Health, Housing Renewal, Community Safety and Trading Standards)

The offices are closed over the bank holiday weekend.

Revenues, Benefits, Blue Badges and Payments Team

Online applications remain available for council tax/local council tax support/housing benefit and Blue Badges.
